A delicious combo of coconut milk pulao / thengai paal sadam platter with turnip kurma, biryani chutney, raita, and bread pudding, and that’s what I am presenting today.
If there is one combo that I keep repeating at home, it is the coconut milk pulao (popularly known as thengai paal sadam in Tamil) and the turnip kurma. No words to express how delicious this combo is. I request you all to give this a try yourself and thank me later. (PS – it is one of the popular recipes on my IG as well. )
As part of today’s thali post, I shared the biryani chammanthi or the chutney earlier. Initially, I was planning to make this chammanthi and serve it along with Thalaserry veg biryani and make the Sulaimani tea or the Kattan chaya. You can find Sulaimani tea served after heavy meals in Kerala.
Kattan Chaya is a usual affair in our house these days, as I am reducing my dairy intake. I shared the recipe on my IG, but then the plans got changed. I ended up making my comfortable and go-to combo of thengai paal sadam or coconut milk pulao and turnip kurma. But this time, the Salmonella outbreak was ok, so I was able to use raw onions finally.
I am so happy that I could share all the Indian thalis and platters this entire month despite the crazy challenges, including the pandemic, the fire, and smoke in California, and the Salmonella outbreak. Twenty-six days of non-stop posting has become a big feat these days. I hope you all liked this series and now let me get back to the platter.
Coconut Milk Pulao Platter
So in today’s platter, I have the mild coconut milk pulao with turnip kurma and included some onion raita and the biryani chammanthi that intensified the flavor profile of this entire platter. And for the dessert, I have the simple eggless bread pudding.
PS – If you try this platter combo please don’t forget to comment and rate this recipe. If you have any questions, please leave a comment, and I will get to it asap. The use of coconut milk is so extensive in South , so do you all use freshly made coconut milk or the ready one ? I remember my ma , she used to make it from the scratch , but that’s the time when it could not be sourced from market .
The biryani sounds super flavorful , we are all fond of rice dishes , and this with coconut milk would be enjoyed .
I will check out the other recipes later – would definitely try the chutney too .
It sure is a challenge posting non stop , but hasn’t it been a wonderful experience . Seriously I enjoyed all your posts and your sub themes . Kudos on accepting this challenge inspite of so many hurdles .

Thanks so much, Vaishali. and for this one, I went with store-bought ones. For the amount of coconut milk I use, I opt for store-bought ones these days.

I will check out the recipes, it sounds delicious. I was finding it tough with the salmonella outbreak and limited grocery trips because of the pandemic. After realizing that the stores here get onions from NY, it was one thing less to worry. It’s only when I read your post that I realized how much more challenging it must have been for you..I really hope things get better soon! Enjoyed all your posts and love the plates you use in particular !

Thanks Rajani. :-)

Thanks so much for this theme and for the push. If not for your push, I wouldn’t have completed this. Thanks again!

Hope the fire and smoke situation gets cleared up soon.
Somehow I thought the turnip was an acquired tasted after trying it. I think I am seeing a turnip side dish paired with pulao for the first time. The coconut milk adds extra flavor to the pulao. I checked the biryani chutney which also happens to be a new dish to me. Loved your biryani / pulao platters this week.

Yesterday another fire started and smoke is still prevailing. I hope things getter better soon. I first saw Chef Damu using turnips for kurma and biryanis and I thought of giving it a try and oh boy it was amazing. That’s how it all started. And thanks a lot.
