A simple lunch menu with zucchini thepla, potatoes with sesame seeds, tomato pickle, and turmeric mint buttermilk.
I am super excited to share this lunch/dinner menu. Are you wondering why? I made all the three vegetable-based dishes with the veggies harvested from my backyard. It’s a backyard to kitchen kind of meal.
During the initial shelter-in-place, many trends were going around, like dalgona coffee, banana bread, sourdough bread, IG-live, etc. Apart from doing a couple of IG live and banana bread, I was taking refuge in my backyard garden, and my husband pitched in as well, and this year we got a decent amount of produce with which we could sustain.
We are still harvesting some tomatoes and zucchinis. I am making tomato purees and cutting and freezing zucchini. I have a few more zucchini recipes coming up as well. So stay tuned.
I was procrastinating on making theplas for a while, so decided to make some with zucchini this time. Heeding to my buddy’s suggestion I decided to serve theplas with potato curry with sesame seeds/batata nu shaak. I adapted the recipe from Tarla Dalal’s website and it was really delicious.
And the pickle is Tamil Nadu style tomato thokku. I told you in the aloo paratha post that my pickles will be mostly South Indian style ones, so don’t get shocked. :-) You can make it in bulk and serve it along with idli, dosa, chapati, and many other dishes.
And I included a simple chaas/buttermilk with turmeric and dried mint with this thali.
I wish I could have added some more protein but taste-wise this meal was a well-balanced once and I will definitely make it again.

Love the whole platter with thepla and north Indian and South Indian side dishes with chaas. Enjoyed all your flatbread platters this week especially the drinks.

Thanks Narmadha.

Zucchini is a close cousin of bottle gourd and those are very popular in a Gujarati kitchen , the complete meal sounds authentic and delicious too . The buttermilk though is new to me .
Srividhya G says
Thanks a lot, Vaishali. I am just adding turmeric powder to all our beverages these days.

Feels very fulfilling right, cooking with the home grown vegetables. I am assuming the potatoes were of the purple variety. Interesting chaas with mint and turmeric too.
Srividhya G says
Yes Harini, those are purple potato varieties.

I was wondering what curry and drink were they. :) The addition of zucchini keeps theplas softer. I loved your paratha, curry, pickle, drink plan of this week.

Thanks much Suma.
