December is here and so is the holiday season and so is the edible Christmas gift carnival at VVK. The Christmas countdown has already begun, and this year, I thought of sharing some delicious edible goodies that you can share with your friends and family.
Why Pumpkin Pie Spiced Date and Nut Balls?
Wondering what inspired me to share these DIY edible gifts? This quote – “Any present you craft with your own two hands is an instant winner” from good housekeeping December issue. :-) That’s a great inspiring quote, right?
I am starting the series with this all natural pumpkin pie spiced dates and nuts balls. Last month, when I visited my friend N, she shared the store-bought Pecan Pumpkin Pie Spiced Date Rolls, and it was so delicious. I liked the combination of dates and the pumpkin pie spice. I wanted to try it at home, and I did duly. Instead of pecans, I went with mixed nuts, and that includes pecans, almonds, and pistachios.
Also, I did not make these as rolls instead made them into balls. Now you can call them as date ladoos too. :-) You can make this in bulk and when you crave for some sweet, pick this, and you won’t regret it. :-)
Variations in Date and Nut Balls
As always the sky is the limit when it comes to cooking. You can make date balls with your favorite spice and nuts. You can mix and match according to your preference. If you don’t have pumpkin pie spice, then add ¼ tsp of cinnamon powder and ⅛ tsp of dry ginger powder or go only with cinnamon powder. You can skip the pumpkin-pie spice entirely and go with vanilla flavor or the seasonal peppermint flavor too.
You can pack these decadent treats in small gift boxes, personalize it with your Christmas message and gift it to your loved ones. I am sure they will enjoy these hand-crafted treats. Without any further ado, let me share how I made these pumpkin pie spiced date balls with nuts.
Pumpkin Pie Spiced Date and Nut Balls Recipe
Ingredients:
- Dates – 10
- Pecans – 10
- Almonds – 10
- Deshelled Pistachios – 10
- Pumpkin Pie Spice – ½ tsp
- Water – 1 tbsp
Prep-Work:
- I used seedless dates. If you are using the ones with seeds, then remove the seeds and chop it roughly.
Steps:
- In a mixer jar, take all the nuts.
- Pulse them twice or thrice and grind it into a coarse powder. Transfer it into a bowl.
- Now in the same mixer jar, add the chopped dates and the pumpkin pie spice.
- Pulse it once and then add the water and grind it into a coarse paste.
- Transfer it to a bowl and add 2 tbsp of the ground nuts and mix it.
- Adding nuts makes the ground dates firm and thick.
- Now pinch a small gooseberry sized date mix and shape it into a round ball.
- Roll this ball in the nut mix so that the nuts get evenly coated. Set this aside.
- Similarly, make round balls with the remaining mix.
- Refrigerate this for at least 2 hours before serving.
Notes:
- Adjust the pumpkin pie spice according to your preference. You can check the variations that I mentioned in the post and add the flavor of your choice.
- I did not roast the nuts. But you can roast the nuts slightly before pulsing it.
- You include nuts of your choice and also other dry fruits like figs etc.
