Peppermint white hot chocolate is one of those popular seasoning beverages that you can find in many coffee joints. Guess what? With simple ingredients, you can easily make it at home.
What’s so special about this homemade white hot chocolate
- Flavored with peppermint and topped with a crushed candy cane, this is a perfect warm beverage to pair with your festive meal spread. This hot chocolate is a crowd-pleaser recipe for sure!
- You can easily customize the flavors and toppings.
- You can easily make it on the stove-top or microwave. (I have provided the instructions for both below)
- While the store-bought version is loaded with heavy cream and topping, you can adjust as per your preference.
- A caffeine-free beverage perfect for kids and adults.
Ingredients required
We need only four ingredients for this recipe, and here they are,
- Milk – I used whole milk for this recipe, and along with white chocolate, it made this drink rich and creamy.
- White chocolate chips – You need 1.5 to 2 oz of white chocolate chips for one cup of milk. Use good quality white chocolate chips made with cacao butter. (You can check out my homemade white chocolate too)
- Peppermint extract: For the flavor, I went with peppermint extract. Instead of peppermint extract, you can add crushed candy canes too. But adding peppermint extract does make a difference.
- Crushed candy cane: I topped it with ½ tsp of finely crushed candy cane. That’s optional, though.
Variation and other toppings
Instead of peppermint extract, you can add vanilla extract and make a vanilla-flavored white hot chocolate. The butterscotch extract will work too.
Before serving, you can top it with whipped cream and add marshmallows or caramel sauce.
Dietary specifications
This is a nut-free and gluten-free dish. I haven’t tested this recipe with vegan substitutes.
Enjoy this drink warm. It’s a comforting drink in the colder months for sure. I always make it fresh and serve it immediately. I never made this drink ahead.

Stove-top instructions
- Add the milk to a saucepan and warm it over medium-low heat. As soon as you see tiny bubbles, you can add the chocolate—no need to bring it to a boil.
- Add the white chocolate, and using a hand whisk, gently mix until the chocolate melts.
- Add in the peppermint extract and when it comes to a gentle simmer, turn off the heat.
- Serve immediately topped with crushed candy canes.
Microwave instructions
- Add the milk and microwave for 45 to 60 seconds in a microwave-safe glass or pitcher.
- Now add the white chocolate and microwave again for 45 seconds. I did not adjust the power settings, and I went with the high setting.
- Mix well, and by now, the chocolate would have melted. Add the peppermint extract and serve warm. Add your favorite toppings and enjoy.
