Why you’ll love this ginger turmeric tea
I’m a tea and coffee lover—I start my day with strong-filter coffee, but in the evenings, I reserve a comforting cup of chai. I love experimenting with different flavors, from mint, tulsi (Indian basil), lemongrass, and fennel to the classic combination of ginger and cardamom. Recently, I started adding fresh turmeric to my tea during the season, and I absolutely love the depth of flavor it brings.
Turmeric has gained massive popularity in the West, and it is often seen in supplements and health stores. But instead of spending on supplements, why not include turmeric in your daily diet naturally? Along with curries and soups, you can enjoy turmeric in beverages like Haldi Doodh (Golden Milk) and Haldi Chaas (Golden Buttermilk).
Now, let’s get back to this aromatic ginger-turmeric milk tea recipe!
Ingredients for ginger turmeric milk chai
(Note: Tea preferences vary, so feel free to adjust the ingredients according to your taste.)
- I always use a 1:1 ratio of water and milk. For this below measure, which serves two, I have used 1 cup of water and 1 cup of reduced-fat milk.
- I have used fresh turmeric and ginger along with green cardamom to enhance the flavor of this tea. You can skip cardamom and go with turmeric and ginger alone.
- I have used black loose tea. You can use tea bags as well. This particular brand is from my native state, but you can use your preferred black tea brand.
- Finally, regarding the sweetener, I used sugar.
Please check the recipe card for exact measurements.
Dietary information
- Gluten-Free & Nut-Free
- Vegan-Friendly (Swap dairy milk with oat, almond, or soy milk)
Customizing your chai
- Milk Options: I prefer a 1:1 ratio of water and milk, but you can adjust it or use nut milk, oat milk, or soy milk for a vegan version.
- Tea Leaves: I use black loose-leaf tea, but tea bags work just fine.
- Sweetener Choices: Sugar works best for me, but you can use palm sugar, stevia, or jaggery. I don’t recommend honey, maple syrup, or agave for milk-based teas.
Can I use turmeric powder instead of fresh turmeric?
Yes! If you don’t have fresh turmeric, substitute with turmeric powder. You can even make a homemade chai spice mix with:
- ¼ tsp ginger powder
- ¼ tsp turmeric powder
- ⅛ tsp cardamom powder
Use this mix the same way or stir it into hot water with honey for a caffeine-free herbal turmeric tea.
How to make ginger turmeric chai
- Simmer the spices: In a saucepan, add 1 cup of water and bring it to a gentle simmer. Add crushed ginger, turmeric, and cardamom, letting it simmer for 2 minutes.
- Steep the tea: Add 2 tsp black tea and bring it to a vigorous boil to infuse the flavors.
- Sweeten the tea: Stir in sugar and mix well.
- Add milk & boil: Pour in 1 cup milk, bring it to a full boil, then turn off the heat.
- Strain : Using a tea strainer, strain the tea.
- Serve: into cups and enjoy it hot.
