Chikoo chocolate lassi – A simple chocolate-flavored lassi with the goodness of chikoo or sapodilla! Check how to make this lassi with detailed stepwise pictures.
Back home, lunch and dinner are complete only with yogurt rice /curd rice. Yes, we enjoy plain rice mixed with plain yogurt/curd in South India. While it helps to balance spices and spicy food, it also gives the needed probiotics to our bodies.

As we try to reduce our rice consumption, I rely on salted lassi and buttermilk (chaas) for our probiotics. Once in a while, we treat ourselves to sweet lassi like dates and gulkand lassi or mango lassi, or this chikoo chocolate lassi.
Ingredients required
Chikoo or sapodilla – It’s the tropical fruit I enjoyed growing up. While it’s hard to find fresh ones in California or NJ, you can find frozen ones in Indian groceries. I used the frozen ones for this recipe. You can use either one. If using fresh, rinse them well, peel the skin if it’s not tender, and remove the seeds. The frozen ones that I used came peeled and seeded.
Yogurt- I used no-fat Greek yogurt for that added protein content. You can use homemade or store-bought yogurt of your choice and use full-fat or reduced-fat. For this lassi, I prefer not-so-sour yogurt.
Cocoa powder: The combination of cocoa and chikoo yields the chocolaty brown look to this lassi. It’s an optional ingredient. I used unsweetened cocoa, and I recommend the same.
Sugar: Depending upon the sweetness of Chikoo we need some sugar. You can use other sweeteners of your choice as well.
Apart from these four ingredients, we also need some water. This lassi recipe is a simple 5-ingredient lassi recipe.
VVK Tips
- I love this lassi cold. So even if you are using fresh fruits, I highly recommend freezing them for some time and blending them with the yogurt.
- Do not add the sugar initially. After blending the yogurt and chikoo along with cocoa powder, taste the lassi and add the sugar as required.
How to make chikoo chocolate lassi
- Add the sapodilla slices, yogurt, water, and cocoa powder, and blend it for 30 to 40 seconds until it’s creamy.
- Check for sweetness and add sugar accordingly. I added 3 tbsp of sugar.
- Blend it again. That’s it. Chikoo lassi is ready. Transfer it to serving glasses and enjoy.
Recipe Notes
- Depending upon the sweetness of the chikoo, adjust the sugar.
- You can use maple syrup, honey, or safe sugar alternatives instead of sugar. You can also include 2 tbsp of sweetened condensed milk for a rich and creamy version.
- You can use plant-based yogurt for a vegan version. Feel free to swap full-fat or reduced-fat yogurt.
- I typically don’t add milk to my lassi. You can reduce half the measure of water and add milk too.

YUM! We love this combo at home. Years back, I used to sneak chickoo to my son this way. Your post is bringing back memories and it is time to make some more of it. Great recipe to beat the heat.

Chocolate and Chikoo is a unique combination and a lassi with it must be tasting so good. Heavenly is the word, specially in summers when you want to drink more and eat less.
