Ingredients and alternatives
Grape Tomatoes: While many prefer cherry tomatoes for these skewers, I chose grape tomatoes, which worked beautifully. Choose whichever you can find. If cherry or grape tomatoes aren’t available, regular tomatoes can be used—slice them into smaller pieces.
Mozzarella: Mozzarella balls are ideal for these skewers, but sliced mozzarella works just as well. I used sliced mozzarella here, cutting it into small pieces to match the size of the grape tomatoes.
Fresh Basil: The combination of tomatoes, mozzarella, and fresh basil is divine. I highly recommend using fresh basil leaves, plus a little extra chopped basil for garnish.
Olive Oil: A high-quality extra virgin olive oil enhances the flavors wonderfully. You’ll need 2 to 3 tablespoons for drizzling just before serving.
Balsamic Glaze: This ingredient is optional, but I used store-bought balsamic glaze for a final drizzle before serving. It not only boosts the flavor but also adds a visually appealing touch.
Other Ingredients: Don’t forget salt and pepper to season. For exact measurements, please refer to the recipe card.
Also, you need wooden skewers to thread the tomatoes, cheese, and basil.
Dietary specifications & storage suggestions
These caprese skewers are vegetarian, gluten-free, and nut-free. These skewers can be prepared in advance, but add the olive oil, balsamic glaze, and seasonings just before serving. They’re so delicious that they usually disappear quickly! However, if you have leftovers, you can easily turn them into a flavorful soup. Simply remove the tomatoes, cheese, and basil from the skewers, cook them with broth until softened, and then puree the mixture. Adjust the seasoning to taste, and enjoy it with some fresh bread.
How to make caprese skewers
- Finely chop about one tablespoon of basil leaves and add them to the serving dish. Drizzle with one tablespoon of olive oil.
- Next, assemble the skewers by threading one tomato, a piece of sliced cheese, a basil leaf (folded or left as is), and another tomato onto each skewer. Arrange the prepared skewers on the serving dish.
- Repeat the process with the remaining tomatoes, cheese, and basil until all the ingredients are used.
- Finish by garnishing with chopped basil and drizzling more olive oil and balsamic glaze over the skewers—finally, season with salt and pepper just before serving. Enjoy!
