Tater Tots – A kid’s friendly potato snack. According to wiki, Tater is the abbreviation of potato. There are two reasons for naming it as tater tots – as it is served for toddlers or could be because of their bite size. These bite sized snacks have the good of potatoes and cheese. It can’t go wrong right? It is pretty much similar to Aloo tikki without cheese.
Pretty much all the kids here in US would have tasted this simple and yummy snack. It is very common in school lunch cafeterias. This was served as lunch side in one of the preschools that kiddo went to. These are deep-fried grated potatoes but instead of frying I went with baking. Even with baking it came out crispy and kiddo wiped the plate clean in no time and asked for second serving.
Here is the recipe,
Ingredients:
- Medium sized potatoes – 6
- Cheese of your choice – a handful
- Salt – ¾ tsp (adjust according the cheese variety and to your taste)
- Onion Powder – 1 tsp
- Paprika – ¼ tsp (You can also use black pepper powder)
- Oil for spraying
Steps:
- Preheat the oven to 350 degree F and place a parchment sheet or aluminium foil on baking tray and grease it generously and set aside.
- I microwaved the potatoes in the potato mode. (I have the potato setting)
- Basically we need to boil the potatoes. You can do it in your comfortable way.
- Let it cool down and peel the skin and mash them.
- Now onion powder, paprika and mix well.
- Then add the cheese and mix again.
- Now start making small cylindrical shapes or round shapes or any shape of your choice.
- Place these tater tots in the baking tray and bake them for 20 minutes on one side.
- After 20 minutes, let it cool for couple of minutes so that you can easily flip them over.
- Now flip them and bake again at 350 degree F for 15 more minutes are until they turn crisp.
That’s it. Baked tater tots are ready. Serve hot with ketchup.
Notes:
- As I mentioned boil the potatoes in your comfortable method.
- Adjust the salt depending upon the cheese you use. (I used the organic Mexican blend for this)
- To this you can add chat masala, mint and play with the flavors.
