The recipe is straightforward. You prepare the batter, let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, and make the waffles. With a waffle maker, you don’t need to babysit so that you can get around with other chores.
What’s so special about this waffle?
- Easy to make with the goodness of quinoa flour.
- You can easily customize it to a vegan version.
- You can use the same batter to make pancakes as well.
- No butter is required, and we need only a tsp of oil.
Ingredients required
Flours – I have used equal measures of all-purpose flour and quinoa flour. You can make these waffles only with all-purpose flour or use a mix of all-purpose flour and wheat flour like I did for my plain waffles.
Baking powder: You need ½ tsp for this measure. Do no use more as it makes the batter bitter. Make sure to use good quality and non-expired baking powder.
Applesauce: Unsweetened applesauce works best. You can use store-bought or homemade but make sure to use unsweetened ones.
Cinnamon and vanilla: I have used both cinnamon powder and vanilla extract for this recipe. I highly recommend both for this recipe.
Oil: I used 1 tsp of regular cooking oil. I did not use any to grease the waffle iron.
Milk: We need ½ cup of milk, and for this recipe, I have used whole milk. Use plant-based for a vegan version. You need ⅓ to ½ cup of milk for this measure. This batter and this measure work for both waffles and pancakes. Yes, I make pancakes with this same batter and measure.
Brown sugar: Even though we serve waffles with syrup, I add a tbsp of brown sugar. It gives nice color and adds good flavor too.

Dietary specifications, yield and serving suggestions
This applesauce waffle is a nut-free and eggless waffle recipe. Use plant-based milk for a vegan version.
Yield: The below measure yields one 8-inch waffle and a small one. I usually add ¾ cup of batter for making one waffle, and with the remaining small amount, I either make a pancake or another small waffle.
Serve the waffles warm with maple syrup or agave nectar along with fruits of your choice.
Once the waffles have cooled down, you can freeze them too.
How to make eggless applesauce waffles with quinoa flour
- Sieve the all-purpose flour, quinoa flour, baking powder, and ground cinnamon in a bowl. Sieving helps in a lump-free and smooth batter.
- Add the apple sauce, oil, vanilla extract, and brown sugar.
- Slowly add the milk and make a lump-free and smooth batter using a hand whisk. Do not overmix the batter. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Preheat the waffle maker. I usually keep it in my medium setting. (This is the waffle maker I have). Pour the batter into the preheated waffle iron and close it. I usually cook mine for 6 to 7 minutes. Make the waffles as per the manufacturer’s instructions and adjust the timing as per your texture preference. (crisp or soft)
Recipe notes
- Do not add more than the said measure of the baking powder. It turns the waffles bitter.
- You can use milk of your choice. You need ⅓ to ½ cup of milk for this measure. I don’t make a thick waffle batter, and I use the entire ½ cup. I have used the same batter for making pancakes too.
- Make the waffles as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Please see the ingredient section for more details.

This is a great recipe to include quinoa. Addition of apple sauce gives a soft texture inside as well as sweetening the waffle. Yummy breakfast that I would love to have even everyday!
