It’s been ages since I posted a millet recipe. I am glad to post a different millet based upma recipe today. It’s the Barnyard Millet Flakes Upma or Kuthiraivali Aval Upma. This upma is a delicious and crunchier upma with the fragrance of coconut oil. Wondering where I got the barnyard millet flakes? It’s from the Native Food Store. Thanks to Native Food Store for this unique millet product. :-)

Millets, with high nutritional value and fiber content, are gaining their popularity back again. Be it Little millet or foxtail millet or barnyard millet or kodo millet or the finger millet, each has its health benefits, and each of them provides the essential nutrients to our regular diet.

    Native Food Store

Looking for where to buy these millets regularly in a hassle free way? The answer is Native Food Store. They have a broad range of millet products, and that includes not only the millets but also all the millet flakes/aval, millet noodles (comes with tastemaker), instant millet mixes and other traditional products. When I got an opportunity to try their products, I happily agreed, and they sent me barnyard millet flakes and multi millet noodles.

Native Food Store produce packed on the table

The barnyard millet flakes caught my attention, and I immediately tried this upma. We liked the flavor and texture and of course the taste, and I am planning to try the other millet flakes too. :-)
So what I liked about Native Food Store and their products,

    • The ample range of products
    • The price. The price is very reasonable.
    • Love the package, and each package comes with a recipe(I went with our traditional family recipe though) and also with instructions on how to use the product.
    • Love the website navigation, and it’s straightforward to use, and also they have all their policies stated clear.

As of now, they deliver all over Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. Now hop on to Native Food Store and check their excellent products. But before that here comes the Barnyard Millet Flakes Upma recipe.

    • Barnyard Millet Flakes – 1 cup
    • Green Chili – 1
    • Curry leaves – 5 to 6 leaves
    • Grated Coconut – ½ cup
    • Salt – ½ tsp heaped
    • Water – 1 cup approx
    • Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp
    • Urad Dal – 1 tsp
    • Hing – ¼ tsp
    • Coconut Oil – 1 tbsp

    Prep-Work:

    • Soak the moong dal in water for at least 1 hour.

Soaking the moong dal in water

    • Then drain the water and set aside.
    • Rinse the millet flakes and sprinkle some water (atleast ¼ cup) over 1 cup of barnyard millet flakes and mix well. Let it sit for 7 to 10 minutes.

Mixing and letting it sit for some time

    Steps:

    • Heat the kadai and add oil.

Adding the mustard seeds, urad dal, hing, curry leaves and broken green chilies

    • Once the oil is hot, add the mustard seeds, urad dal, hing, curry leaves and broken green chilies.
    • Then add the drained moong dal and salt.
    • Cook until the water evaporates.

Adding the barnyard millet flakes and mixing well

    • Now add the barnyard millet flakes and mix well.
    • Sprinkle some water and let it cook for two to three minutes.
    • Then add the grated coconut and mix well.
    • Turn off the heat, and that’s it.

Simple yet delicious barnyard millet flakes upma is ready.

    Notes:

    • Instead of drizzling water over barnyard millet flakes, you can soak the barnyard millet flakes in water and if you are soaking it thoroughly, then drain the water after 3 to 4 minutes. Do not let it soak for more than 5 minutes. If not the upma will be sticky.
    • Moong dal is completely optional. But it adds nice texture and crunchiness to the upma. A bit of protein is always good.
    • Adjust the salt and spice as per your preference.
    • 1 tbsp of coconut oil is on the higher side, but it adds nice fragrance and doesn’t let the upma go dry.
    • If you are serving immediately, you can reduce the oil.
    • Also instead of coconut oil, you can use oil of your preference.
